University Honors Citation Requirements

The Honors College Citation in University Honors is an academic distinction and formal acknowledgement that you participated in Maryland’s University Honors living-learning program. The Citation appears on your transcript, and students who earn the Citation wear elegant red and gold Honors cords at Commencement.

The University Honors Citation requires a 3.2 cumulative GPA and completion of a minimum of 16 Honors credits, distributed as follows:

For students whose first semester in University Honors was prior to Fall 2016:

  • 15 Honors credits (five 3-credit Honors courses – HONR seminars or Honors Versions of regular departmental courses)
  • At least nine credits must be Honors seminars or I-Series courses; the remaining six credits can be any combination of H-version classes, HONR seminars, or I-Series courses.
  • One 1 credit Honors colloquium (usually HONR 100)

For students whose first semester in University Honors was Fall 2016 or later:

  • 15 Honors credits (five 3-credit Honors courses – HONR seminars or Honors Versions of regular departmental courses)
  • At least nine credits must be Honors seminars; the remaining six credits can be any combination of H-Version classes and HONR seminars. (Note: I-Series courses that do not have the HONR prefix will not be counted as the equivalent of an HONR seminar for students who started in University Honors/the Honors College in Fall 2016 or later.)
  • One 1 credit Honors colloquium (usually HONR 100)

Students in the Federal Semester Program or the Global Semester in Washington, D.C. Program: The Federal Semester or Global Semester in Washington, D.C. seminar taken in the fall semester is counted as the equivalent of an HONR seminar toward your Citation.  We do not count the internship credits taken in the spring toward the Citation.

The Citation may be completed anytime before graduation. Regardless of when students complete their Citation, they remain part of University Honors the entire time they are an undergraduate at Maryland.

We have developed software to award Citations automatically in the semester after you’ve completed it (for example, if you finish your Citation in a spring semester, you would be invited to the awards ceremony in the following fall semester). If you are a graduating senior who is completing the Citation in your final semester, please contact Dean Hebert at the start of your final semester regarding your Citation. Any questions regarding the Citation should also go to Dean Hebert at the e-mail link above.

Honors College Citation Ceremony is held each semester to award students who earned their Citations at the end of the previous semester. Parents and guests are invited to attend this celebration.
